Adverse Reactions to Orlistat
Orlistat works by reducing the amount of dietary fats absorbed by the body. The unabsorbed fat gets eliminated from the body through bowel movements. Hence, most of the common adverse effects are related to the GI tract.
These adverse effects include steatorrhea i.e. loose and oily stools with increased amount of flatus due to excessive unabsorbed fats present in the large intestine, uncontrolled or urgent bowel movements, and excessive flatulence. These adverse effects can be avoided by consuming a low-fat and low-calorie diet. The fat content of your total daily diet should be reduced to almost 15 grams per meal.
The XENDOS study further revealed that these GI related adverse effects are more intense in the initial days of the therapy and they become milder with time. According to this study, almost 91% of those taking part suffered from at least one more gastrointestinal adverse effect during their first year of treatment with Orlistat. However, this percentage was reduced to 36% in the fourth year of treatment. It was presumed that this massive decrease in adverse effects over time might occur due to the person's long-term compliance with a low-calorie diet.
Some of the rare adverse effects of Orlistat include difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, itching, hives, severe abdominal pain, and skin rashes.
These drugs may also cause liver damage and other hepatic disorders. Signs of liver damage include dark urine due to excessive secretion of bilirubin, fatigue, fever, yellowing of the face and eyes, persistent and severe itching, and vomiting. If these symptoms arise, stop the medication and consult a medical practitioner immediately.
Contraindications of Orlistat
Orlistat interacts with different medications and can lower their efficacy, which can even lead to life-threatening conditions. Such drugs include warfarin, levothyroxine, antiepileptic drugs, and other weight loss medications.
Warfarin is a blood thinner and it's used to treat and prevent life-threatening diseases such as atherosclerosis i.e. formation of clots in blood vessels which disrupts the flow of blood through the arteries and leads to cardiac hypoxia which causes angina and myocardial infarction. Hence, it's highly recommended not to use Orlistat if you are on warfarin.
Similarly, Orlistat decreases the absorption of cyclosporine and levothyroxine, which leads to a massive decrease in the efficacy of these medicines. Hence, it's recommended to take these medicines at least 3 to 4 hours before or after the consumption of Orlistat.
These adverse effects and contraindications must be considered before using cheap Orlistat in the UK.
